Transient Sanctuaries 1: Black Mountain Sanctuary

Inspired by the mystical, mesmerising setting of the dramatic Black Mountains in Wales, a new site-specific interactive installation was created evoking the concept of strata and shifting tectonics.

The existing sculptural timber pavilion was woven with intriguing black bands, which enticed the public to pull, twist and twang these appealingly tactile elements. The bands started as a neat geometrical pattern, following the lines of the timber structure to form the image of a mountain. The installation continuously transformed over the course of the festival as people interacted with the bands, which were created by re-using old bicycle inner tubes.

At night, the installation transformed into a luminous cave, providing an intimate spaces for gathering.
